In my own case at the age of 15 (which is a very long time ago!) I wanted to play rock.  This meant an electric guitar!  I couldn't afford to buy one so I built my own.  I couldn't afford lessons, so I taught myself.

The times they have changed, and now I have four children aged from 12 to 18.  They have all learned to play the guitar, along with a few other instruments too.  My eldest son has a band of his own, and a room full to overflowing with a large quantity of gear. This includes a couple of pairs of headphones. Inexpensive items which come highly recommended by yours truly!

Via the internet you can now get vast quantities of information on every subject under the sun, including how to play the guitar.  You can even get information on how to build your own, which was a lot harder to come by in the days of my youth!  The only problem is that as you search the net much of what you turn up is worse than useless, and sorting the wheat from the chaff takes forever and a day.
